SNOHOMISH TIMES LOCAL AREA NEWS AND REPORT
Published: Monday, February 06, 2012
SNOHOMISH, WA. -- The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office jumped into action this afternoon when 3 people were reported to be in the water. Witnesses called in the report after seeing the victims in the water from the Snohomish Bridge. Sheriffs deputies from the Snohomish police department responded to the bridge to guide the rescue response to the correct location and then responded to the location off the Riverfront Trail themselves. Snohomish Police deputies say a 20-year-old male and 13-year-old female were sitting along the Riverfront Trail near the Snohomish River when the female suddenly jumped in. The male responded by jumping in after her trying to rescue her. Nearby, a woman already on the Snohomish River in a kayak also joined the rescue effort. She too jumped into the water trying to help get the two people to shore. Rescue units responded from all over the county. Rescuers include; Snohomish County Sheriffs Department, Monroe Fire Department (Dive Boat), Snohomish Sheriffs Helicopter, Snohomish County Fire District 3, Snohomish Sheriffs Divers, Snohomish Sheriffs Police Deputies (City Police) and even Snohomish city staff. Witnesses say the response was truly impressive. The scene commander, Sheriffs Lt. Rodney Rochon took control of the situation almost immediately directing the emergency rescue operations and the large number of responders. The large response was for good reason, according to the United States Search and Rescue Task Force; hypothermia will set in if you are submersed in water as cold as the Snohomish River. In water 32.5 - 40 degrees time until exhaustion or unconsciousness is less than 15 minutes and expected time of survival in the water is less than 45 minutes. All three people and one kayak were safely rescued. The male was helped up the river bank just down the trail from the gazebo first. Then a short time later after the Monroe Fire Dive boat arrived, the girl and the kayaker were picked up. They were brought to the Cady boat launch where the girl was transferred to a stretcher and loaded into a Medic One unit. Both the male and female are expected to make a full recovery because of the fast response of Fire & Rescue. The kayaker was uninjured.
